Hana Mikulenková — born 1985 in Valašské Meziříčí — studies in the Department of Painting — Academy of Fine Arts and Design Bratislava.
Her works have a common feature — the contrast between a draft-like background and a precise, even meticulous decoration. The bilingualism on canvas creates a dialog between concrete narrative shortcuts and a neutral setting, which Mikulenková models areally in large splashes of colour. In her recent works, she prefers ”technical“ ornament, which is applied on the selected parts of a canvas by a spray through a template.
— Katarina Hrdá
My work is a play, communication with colours, a quest for the best expressions, depths of colour, contrast, through the agressive impact of colour itself. I draw inspiration from texts that you can come across in the streets, sprayed by unknown people, who are often despised for bastardising precious objects or buildings.
Written text allows me to express my opinions — the letters disturb the harmony of colours.
I cover and destroy the picture that represents my personal knowledge — snatches of memory transformed by my imagination — usually scenes from the travels I went through, the body of a landscape or sea, which is my biggest inspiration. It is as complex as life, as the painting itself. You never know what to expect. Expressing a contrast is a form of provocation. Also the repetition of shapes, superimposition… the question of prominence... what is important and what is not.
